As Nigerians prepare to usher in the New Year, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, mni, has appealed to motorists nationwide to put safety first and ensure the festivities are not overshadowed by avoidable road crashes.
In a New Year safety message, the Corps Marshal warned that excessive speeding, drunk driving, dangerous overtaking and blatant disregard for traffic rules remain leading causes of fatal crashes during the festive period. He stressed that celebrations should mark a new beginning, not end in tragedy.
Mohammed noted that the New Year season typically witnesses a surge in vehicular movement, fatigue-induced driving and reckless road use, all of which significantly increase the risk of accidents on highways across the country.
He urged drivers to confirm the roadworthiness of their vehicles, obey speed limits, avoid alcohol and drug use while driving, and remain fully attentive on the road. Travellers were also advised to plan their journeys ahead, take adequate rest and cooperate with traffic and safety agencies deployed nationwide.
Reassuring the public, the Corps Marshal said FRSC personnel have been strategically deployed on major highways and critical corridors to manage traffic flow, enforce compliance with road safety regulations and respond swiftly to emergencies.
Emphasising that road safety is a shared responsibility, he called on all road users, drivers, passengers and pedestrians alike to make safety-conscious decisions that will protect lives and property as the nation steps into the New Year.
He concluded by wishing Nigerians a productive, peaceful and safer New Year.
