Preparations are in full swing for the highly anticipated Dr. John Metchie Football Tournament 2024, where 12 teams from various communities in Anambra-East Local Government Area will compete for the coveted trophy.
The tournament’s opening ceremony is scheduled for December 26 at Our Lady Field, Otuocha. Football enthusiasts are expected to gather in large numbers to enjoy the exciting matches in a vibrant and friendly atmosphere, fostering camaraderie among attendees.
Speaking to Ziti News about the event, Chief Amb. Dr. John Metchie, the tournament’s chief sponsor, highlighted that the initiative is part of his broader human capital development agenda. He described the grassroots football competition as a valuable platform for identifying and nurturing young talents, with the potential to groom them for professional football careers in the future.
Dr. Metchie, who also serves as the President-General of the Umueri community and holds the chieftaincy title of Ife-Omambala for his contributions to community development, emphasized that the tournament aims to promote unity and enrich the festive season.
Participating teams will represent communities across Anambra-East, including Aguleri, Umueri, Enugwu-Otu, Eziagulu-Otu, Mkpunando, Enugwu-Aguleri, Nsugbe, Nando, Ikem-Nando, Umuoba-Anam, Igbariam, and John Metchie FC. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams at the end of the competition.
The opening ceremony on December 26 will mark the beginning of a thrilling football event, while the closing ceremony, featuring the grand finale, is slated for January 2, 2025.
