EASTER MESSAGE: DEFENCE CHIEF URGES JOURNALISTS TO PROMOTE TRUTH, UNITY*

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has called on journalists to uphold truth and professionalism as key tools for strengthening national unity and security.

Speaking through a representative at an Easter retreat organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, the defence chief said Nigeria’s stability depends not only on military operations but also on how information is shared with the public.

He assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces remain committed to defending the country despite ongoing security challenges, expressing confidence that the nation will overcome its difficulties.

Drawing from the Easter message, Oluyede said the season symbolises hope, renewal and victory over trials.

“Nigeria continues to face complex security issues, but we are resilient. Challenges will not last forever, and with unity and faith, renewal is possible,” he said.

He reaffirmed the military’s determination to tackle terrorism, insurgency and banditry, noting that the sacrifices of troops have helped restore peace in many affected areas.

The defence chief also stressed the powerful role of the media in shaping public perception, urging journalists to avoid reports that could spread fear or division.

“In today’s world, security is not fought only with weapons but also with information. Responsible reporting helps build trust and unity,” he added.

He further called on citizens to support security agencies by providing useful information and cooperation, while paying tribute to fallen soldiers and asking for prayers for those still on duty.

Also speaking, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, highlighted the importance of ethical journalism in building a strong and accountable nation.

He said responsible reporting promotes transparency, fights corruption and strengthens democratic institutions.

“A nation is built on trust and accountability. Ethical journalism helps inform citizens and holds leaders responsible,” he said.

Earlier, NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, urged journalists to use the Easter period as a time to reflect and renew their commitment to truth, integrity and professionalism.

He acknowledged the challenges journalists face, including pressure, risks and high expectations, but encouraged them to stay committed to the core values of the profession.

“Being in the Federal Capital Territory places a special responsibility on us. Our reports shape national conversations and influence decisions,” he said.

He also called for unity among journalists, describing it as essential for protecting press freedom and advancing the profession.

The Easter retreat, themed “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life,” brought together journalists, security officials and other stakeholders to reflect on the role of the media in national development.
