Edo Opens New Chapter: Tourism DG Hails Oba’s Historic Visit, Says State “Ready for the World”

Edo Opens New Chapter: Tourism DG Hails Oba’s Historic Visit, Says State “Ready for the World”

By Hannah Williams

Edo State is set for a new era of unity, culture, and economic revival as the Director General of the Edo State Tourism Agency, Lady Vivian Elabor, declared that the recent visit of His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, to Governor Monday Okpebholo signals that “Edo is ready for the world.”

The historic courtesy visit, which took place on Friday, November 7, 2025, at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin City, drew a distinguished gathering of traditional rulers, political leaders, and cultural icons. It marked a powerful display of harmony between the revered Benin Monarch and the state government.

Lady Elabor described the event as a “moment of unity and rebirth,” emphasizing that Edo State under Governor Okpebholo is poised to reclaim its place as a global hub for culture, tourism, and business.

“This visit signifies unity and collaboration,” Elabor said. “Our governor is a simple man who respects culture and brings everyone together. When we unite, we can build an outstanding state that truly works for the people.”

Royal Endorsement, Cultural Clarity

The meeting also brought resolution to the long-running dispute over the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA). Oba Ewuare II clarified that the project was originally conceived as the Benin Royal Museum, receiving overwhelming royal and public support for its restoration under that name.

“The world recognizes it as the Benin Royal Museum, and it must remain so,” the Monarch stated.

Governor Okpebholo immediately endorsed the royal stance, announcing that the matter was now settled.

“The issue of the Museum of West African Art is over,” the governor declared. “It was a birthday gift to Your Majesty, and it will be restored as the Benin Royal Museum.”

He also pledged to seek President Bola Tinubu’s support to ensure the museum’s completion under its rightful identity.

A Cultural and Economic Turning Point

Oba Ewuare II praised the governor—whom he fondly called “Akpakomiza,” meaning divinely chosen—for his strides in less than a year, including the restoration of the Benin Traditional Council’s statutory allocation and the return of the Oba Akenzua Cultural Centre.

For Lady Elabor, the day marked the dawn of a new era for Edo tourism and global visibility.

“We are all about culture, heritage, and serious business,” she affirmed. “Edo is ready for the world. Are you ready for us?”

The event, the third of its kind in recent times, ended with prayers for peace and progress across Edo State—sealing a renewed bond between tradition and governance, and setting the stage for a vibrant cultural and economic future.
