As Nigerians across the country mark Eid El Adha, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for national reflection, urging leaders and citizens alike to confront the worsening challenges of food insecurity and violent unrest threatening the nation’s progress.
In a statement released by NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the union extended warm Eid greetings while issuing a sober reminder that celebration must be balanced with concern for millions facing hunger and insecurity.
“This is a season of gratitude, but also a time for deep reflection,” Abdullahi said. “While we commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s developmental strides over the past two years, we must not lose sight of the stark realities affecting everyday Nigerians from escalating banditry and the resurgence of Boko Haram to worsening power outages and food shortages.”
The NUJ noted that the current security crisis has paralyzed agriculture in many regions, creating ripple effects that now threaten the nation’s food supply chain. The union emphasized that a stable food system is fundamental not only to public health but also to national peace and stability.
Calling on the Federal Government to reassess and strengthen its strategy, the NUJ urged targeted, sustainable interventions. “The plight of the marginalized must be prioritized,” the statement read. “Empowering farmers, boosting agricultural productivity, and ensuring community safety are urgent imperatives.”
As Muslim faithful gather in prayer and festivity, the NUJ encouraged citizens to remember those displaced or suffering due to insecurity and economic hardship. The union reaffirmed its commitment to amplifying the voices of the underserved and supporting solutions-driven dialogue.
“In unity, we can build a more secure and prosperous Nigeria one where no citizen is left behind,” Abdullahi concluded.
Happy Eid El Adha, Nigeria.
