The Area Education Officer in charge of Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State, Mr Juhul John, has identified the prolonged Farmers-Herders crisis as a major impediment to the effective teaching and learning in some schools in the state.
Reacting to the aforementioned crisis in an exclusive interview with Ziti Online Newspapers in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, Mr Juhul, lamented that there’s no single soul in some of the schools visited due to persistent attacks on some communities by armed herdsmen.
The interview in part: “there’s no way you can rule out that there are no challenges in some schools. We have been to Government Secondary School, Tatyough, there is nobody there due to Fulani attacks on some communities. In that school, there is no single soul there. The Principal and teachers are there but there are no learners in that school due to Farmers-Herders crisis.”
According to Mr Juhul, it is the responsibility of schools Administrators in crisis areas to arrange for students who registered for WAEC and other examinations to enable them write the examinations in other centers.
He stressed that ” schools Administrators are responsible for making such arrangements. Schools Administrators are in position to make alternative arrangements for candidates who registered for West African Examinations Council, WAEC, National Examinations Council,NECO, to write these examinations in other centers.
The Area Education Officer, hinted that his plan is to ensure that teaching and learning take place in all schools.” Our functions as evaluators is to ensure that teaching and learning take place in schools. We are Evaluators, we move out to ensure that teaching and learning is taking place, and teachers are reporting to their schools, that is, teachers are there to take care of the children, to impart knowledge to the learners.”
