GBV: Group calls for Sustained Action to End Gender Based Violence in Women and Girls

The Chief Executive Officer of the Women and Young People’s Awareness Initiative,WAYAI,  Ovenaone Jennifer Uniga says the struggle to eliminate Gender Based Violence in Nigeria must be sustained.

Ovenaone Jennifer Uniga stated this during a One-day project review meeting on Gender Based Violence, GBV held in Jalingo the Taraba State Capital.

She urged relevant stakeholders to continue the conversion on finding lasting solutions and ways to end GBV among Women and Girls in the Society a situation she described as a disturbing reoccurance regardless of the efforts by her organization and other groups poised to speak against such inhuman Acts.

“Today we are gathered to review what we have done so far on these project, Strengthening Women’s voices, Institutions, Women’s Right and Ending Violence against Women and Girls in Nigeria, it has been an eye opener for us as a team”

“We appreciate the support from our Funders, The Nigerian Women Trust Fund for enabling us to go into this local community to create such awareness, even as we hope this kind gesture will continue, let me appeal to the few persons we have impacted during this project to continue on the good work” Uniga added.

Also speaking at the event, Publisher of Ziti Newspaper who also doubles as the President of TAIMAKO Women in Media, WIM, Queen Kunde Enoch said the Media is one vital instrument through which we can end or eliminate GBV against women and girls in Nigeria through constant reportage and awareness documentary publications on the subject matter.

‘With continued media, Print, Electronic and Social Media reportage and documentary publications on the subject matter we can eliminate GBV thereby engendering a new behavior within the society such that even the men can become advocates of the elimination of such harmful practices she added.

The one-day meeting had participants drawn from the Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development, Justice, Education and Health as well as Some women-led organisations and School head teachers who all pledged their support to a sustained Struggle to End Gender Based Violence in Women and Girls in Nigeria.
