Gov Alia Lauds National Assembly Over State Police Bill

Gov Alia Lauds National Assembly Over State Police Bill

By Isaac Kertyo

Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, has applauded the House of Representatives over passage of a bill for the creation of state police.

The governor who gave the commendation through his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, during his broadcast to the people of Benue State on the occasion of 2026 Democracy Day anniversary, contended that the passage of the state police bill was a bold and laudable effort towards strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.

According to Governor Alia, the bill recognizes the need for a more localized and responsive policing system capable of addressing the peculiar security challenges facing different states and communities in the country.

Governor Alia verbatim: “The Lawmakers deserve appreciation for demonstrating courage, foresight, and commitment to the protection of lives and property.

“I urge Nigerians to view this development in good faith and as a necessary reform aimed at enhancing public safety and deepening grassroots security. With appropriate safeguard, accountability mechanisms, and constitutional checks, state police can complement existing security agencies, improve intelligence gathering, and promote quicker response to threats.”

The governor, who described the bill as a significant achievement in the collective quest for a safer and more secure Nigeria, asserted that his administration has made sincere efforts to secure the state, by strengthening security through collaboration with security agencies, provision of over 150 operational vehicles and 600 motorcycles, establishment of the Benue State Civil Protection Guards, and the Anyam Nyor Joint Taskforce.

He said the efforts improved security and facilitated the gradual return of pace to several parts of the state.
