GRACE IKE BAGS SILENT HERO AWARD, VOWS TO DEFEND ETHICAL JOURNALISM

GRACE IKE BAGS SILENT HERO AWARD, VOWS TO DEFEND ETHICAL JOURNALISM

By Queen Kunde

Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has been honoured with the Silent Hero in Management Award at the 8th Silent Heroes Awards Abuja 2026, in recognition of her leadership and contributions to the journalism profession.

Receiving the award, Ike described the honour as a tribute not only to her but also to journalists and media professionals who work tirelessly behind the scenes to uphold responsible journalism.

She said the recognition would inspire her to continue serving the profession with integrity, dedication and a strong sense of responsibility.

“I receive this award with profound gratitude, deep humility and a renewed commitment to serve. This honour belongs to every journalist, media professional and union member who continues to strengthen our profession through hard work and sacrifice,” she said.

The NUJ FCT Chairman noted that the successes recorded by the council were the result of teamwork and the collective efforts of members, executive officers, chapel leaders, veterans and other stakeholders.

She stressed that the award would encourage her to work harder to improve the welfare of journalists while promoting professionalism and ethical reporting.

According to Ike, journalists remain the custodians of truth and defenders of democracy, adding that the profession must continue to be guided by ethics, fairness and public interest, especially at a time when misinformation, insecurity and other national challenges threaten society.

She reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening journalists’ welfare, expanding capacity-building programmes, promoting ethical journalism, fostering unity within the NUJ and creating opportunities that would improve the professional and economic well-being of members.

Ike dedicated the award to journalists across Nigeria who continue to carry out their duties with courage despite difficult working conditions. She also acknowledged the support of her family, mentors, colleagues and everyone who has contributed to her leadership journey.

She said the recognition was not the end of her work but a fresh motivation to contribute more to journalism, nation-building and humanity.

The NUJ FCT Chairman also commended the organisers of the Silent Heroes Awards for recognising individuals whose contributions often go unnoticed, describing the initiative as a worthy platform that celebrates selfless service and impactful leadership.
