The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has concluded Phase 1 of its sustainable livelihood training for 5,000 Ogoni youths and women, marking the milestone with the distribution of starter kits and certificates. At the event, HYPREP Project Coordinator, Professor Nenibarini Zabbey, urged participants to leverage their newly acquired skills to transform Ogoni into a thriving economic hub.
Professor Zabbey highlighted the program’s significance in restoring livelihoods across Ogoni communities, emphasizing its role in creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs through various projects. He encouraged beneficiaries to use the tools and skills provided to uplift their families and communities, warning against selling the starter kits.
“By embracing this opportunity, you can foster development and prosperity in Ogoni, making it a hub of diverse economic activity. The success of these initiatives depends on your active participation and ownership,” Zabbey stated.
Looking ahead, HYPREP plans to expand its training in demand-driven fields such as full-stack development, GIS, cybersecurity, underwater welding, and agricultural enhancement. Additionally, the organization will launch the Ogoni Peace Award next year to recognize exemplary contributions to peacebuilding and environmental stewardship within the region.
The event was attended by key stakeholders, including HRM King (Dr.) T.Y. Suanu Baridam, who urged continued community support for the project. Professor Zabbey expressed gratitude to the Environment Minister, HYPREP’s Governing Council, and other partners for their unwavering support.
This initiative aligns with HYPREP’s commitment to building trust, promoting sustainable livelihoods, and ensuring that no Ogoni community is left behind
