As the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) marks a monumental 70th anniversary on March 15, 2025, Dr. Chris Isiguzo, former National President of the Union, has sent heartfelt congratulations to the current leadership, led by Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdulahi. In a moving letter, Isiguzo extended his best wishes to the National Executive Council and all members of the Union, recognizing their collective achievement in reaching this historic milestone.
Isiguzo, who served as the Union’s president for six years, highlighted the NUJ’s unwavering commitment to press freedom, professionalism, and the welfare of journalists throughout Nigeria. Reflecting on its establishment in 1955, he commended the Union for its resilience, especially in advocating for the rights of journalists amid political and economic challenges.
“The NUJ has long been a voice for press freedom, tirelessly defending journalists’ rights in the face of adversity,” Isiguzo remarked. “It is with immense pride that I look back on the progress made during my time at the helm and the continued focus on improving working conditions and upholding ethical standards.”
Under Isiguzo’s leadership, the NUJ made significant strides, from strengthening journalists’ welfare to raising the standard of professionalism within the media industry. He praised the Union for remaining steadfast in its mission, navigating through turbulent times while continuing to champion the cause of journalists nationwide.
Today, Isiguzo—who now leads the Congress of African Journalists—expressed his pride in the Union’s accomplishments, particularly its ability to influence national discourse and maintain a strong reputation on the international stage. “The NUJ has not only shaped Nigeria’s media landscape but has also played an integral role in safeguarding justice, promoting press freedom, and ensuring the safety of journalists in difficult environments,” he added.
Looking to the future, Isiguzo conveyed his optimism for the next chapter of the Union, especially under the leadership of Comrade Abdulahi. He believes that the NUJ will continue to build upon its past successes while embracing new challenges in the ever-evolving media landscape.
“I have no doubt that the next 70 years will bring even greater achievements,” Isiguzo affirmed. “The NUJ’s position as a leading institution in the media sector will only be solidified as it continues to safeguard the core values of press freedom, professionalism, and social responsibility.
In his closing remarks, Isiguzo expressed his continued support for the Union’s future endeavors, reiterating his commitment to contributing to its success. He urged all members of the NUJ to take pride in their collective accomplishments and ensure that the Union’s legacy is preserved and strengthened for generations to come.
As the NUJ celebrates this historic anniversary, it does so with the knowledge that its foundation is built on resilience, advocacy, and a deep commitment to the principles of press freedom—values that will guide the Union through the next 70 years and beyond.
