IWD 2025: CWIG Demands Justice as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Suspension Sparks Outrage

By Queen Kunde

A political storm is brewing in Nigeria as the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan sparks national outrage. The Coalition for Women in Governance (CWIG), alongside various advocacy groups and concerned citizens, is calling for the immediate reinstatement of the embattled senator, citing her suspension as a direct attack on democracy and women’s political participation.

The senator, who has been a vocal advocate for justice and good governance, was suspended despite a court order explicitly preventing any disciplinary action against her. CWIG has labeled this move a blatant violation of democratic principles and a suppression of the voices of thousands of Nigerians who elected her.

A Direct Attack on Democracy

The Coalition has outlined several key injustices surrounding Senator Natasha’s suspension:

  1. Defying Judicial Orders – The Senate proceeded with disciplinary action in direct violation of a court ruling, setting a dangerous precedent of lawlessness.
  2. Silencing the People’s Choice – The senator was duly elected, and her suspension effectively strips her constituents of representation.
  3. Disregard for Legislative Norms – The maximum suspension period within the Senate’s rules is 14 days, yet Senator Natasha faces an excessive six-month removal.
  4. A Setback for Women in Politics – The unjust targeting of a female leader discourages other women from pursuing political aspirations and weakens the movement for gender inclusion in governance.

Dr. Jophia Gupar Calls for Women’s Unity

Dr. Jophia Gupar, a prominent member of the coalition and Founder/President of the Pan African Young Women Development Initiative, has urged women across Nigeria to unite against the injustice, stating, “We must speak out whenever and wherever our rights are infringed upon. The Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan saga is a wake-up call for more women to strive for political positions and refuse to be silenced.” Dr. Gupar said.

CWIG’s Demands for Justice

The Coalition for Women in Governance has made clear demands to rectify this injustice:

A Call to Action: A Nation Where No One is Oppressed

The Nigerian national anthem speaks of a nation “where no man is oppressed.” Yet, the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan raises urgent questions about whether justice and democracy are truly upheld in the country. CWIG has called on all Nigerians to take a stand, emphasizing that this fight is not just about one woman but about the future of democracy and governance in Nigeria.

“This is our moment to demand accountability. To every woman, we say: We will not be deterred. To Senator Natasha, we say: You are not alone,” Ambassador Zainab Mohammed declared in the statement on behalf of the CWIG.

As the nation watches, the question remains—will democracy prevail, or will injustice stand unchallenged?
