Abuja, Nigeria – March 8, 2025
As the world marks International Women’s Day 2025, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has joined the global movement in celebrating the unwavering resilience, achievements, and significant contributions of women in various sectors. This year’s theme, “Accelerate Action,” serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made towards gender equality while calling for continued efforts to dismantle barriers and create sustainable opportunities for women to thrive.
Women in journalism, governance, and various other professional spheres have long proven that leadership is driven by competence, vision, and determination—qualities that transcend gender. Through their hard work and innovation, these women have shattered stereotypes and broken down the doors to decision-making roles that were once considered out of reach. The NUJ FCT Council has particularly recognized the growing representation of women in leadership positions and stands resolute in its commitment to fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for women professionals across all sectors.
One of the most remarkable milestones in this ongoing journey is the election of Grace Ike as the first female Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council. Her historic achievement, after 41 years of male-dominated leadership, is a significant testament to the changing landscape of journalism and leadership in Nigeria. Grace Ike’s victory represents much more than personal success—it is a beacon of hope and inspiration for women across the nation and beyond. It sends a powerful message that leadership is defined by capability, vision, and character, not gender.
Reflecting on her remarkable journey, Ike emphasized the need for women to stand together, particularly in the political arena. “International Women’s Day should not just be a symbolic occasion; it should be a moment for women to truly support one another, both publicly and privately,” she said. “We need to move beyond mere gestures and address the hard truths. When women align themselves with men in a political contest at the expense of their fellow women, they undermine the progress we have fought so hard for.”
Her words resonate deeply as she advocates for solidarity among women, urging them to challenge the status quo. “Women must play a more prominent role—not only as voters but as leaders, candidates, and agents of change,” she continued. “The collective power of women in politics is undeniable, and we must stand united in order to create lasting societal transformation.”
For Ike, this moment is not only about celebrating her own success but also about calling for introspection and action. “We must purge ourselves of past wrongs, retrace our steps, and make restitution,” she remarked. “This is a chance for us to genuinely stand in solidarity with each other, particularly in political spaces, where our collective strength is desperately needed.”
Ike also made a heartfelt call to action, urging the federal government, civic leaders, and well-meaning Nigerians to invest in promoting women’s rights and gender equality. “The importance of creating opportunities for more women to step into leadership positions cannot be overstated. The barriers of the past no longer define us,” Ike stated. “This milestone is not just mine; it belongs to every woman who has dared to challenge the norm and fought for a better future.”
The NUJ FCT Council’s dedication to gender inclusivity is further reflected in the collective commitment to empowering women across all sectors. As more women continue to take up leadership roles, their contributions are already shaping the narratives in governance, journalism, and beyond. These women are shaping policies, influencing public discourse, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
On this International Women’s Day, the NUJ FCT Council stands in unwavering solidarity with women worldwide. It celebrates the incredible achievements of women across the globe, while advocating for a future where leadership knows no gender, only competence and vision.
The Council remains committed to supporting women’s rights, promoting gender equality, and ensuring that more women have access to platforms where they can contribute meaningfully to the development of society. Their contributions are shaping a future where leadership is truly inclusive, and where every woman has the opportunity to reach her full potential.
In a world that is still battling against entrenched gender biases, today marks a pivotal moment—a celebration of progress and a renewed call to break down the barriers that limit women’s potential. The work is far from over, but the momentum is undeniable. The future is, indeed, female.
