TCN Receives Two Giant Transformers for New Substation
By Queen Kunde
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has recorded a major milestone in its efforts to improve electricity supply with the arrival of two 100MVA power transformers for the ongoing 330/132/33kV transmission substation in Katsina State.
The transformers, delivered to the TCN Kano Region on Thursday, July 9, 2026, will be installed at the new Katsina substation, a key project aimed at strengthening the national electricity grid and improving power supply across Katsina State and the North-West.
According to TCN, the transformers are among the most important equipment needed to complete the project. Once installed, tested and put into operation, they will add about 160 megawatts (MW) to the region’s electricity transmission capacity.
The company said the new substation will make power transmission more reliable and efficient while improving the stability of the national grid. It will also enable TCN to deliver more bulk electricity to Distribution Companies (DisCos), leading to better power supply for homes, businesses and industries in Katsina and neighbouring communities.
The Katsina project is part of TCN’s nationwide programme to expand, modernise and reinforce Nigeria’s transmission network in response to the country’s growing electricity demand.
Industry experts believe projects such as the Katsina substation will play a vital role in reducing power constraints, improving grid performance and supporting economic growth across the region.
