MAY DAY 2026: NUJ Demands Action on Insecurity, Poverty

MAY DAY 2026: NUJ Demands Action on Insecurity, Poverty

By Queen Kunde

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council, Grace Ike, has called for urgent action to tackle insecurity and poverty, warning that both challenges are hurting workers and threatening decent jobs across the country.

In a statement to mark the 2026 Workers’ Day in Abuja, Ike congratulated journalists and workers, but said the reality on ground demands serious attention.

She described this year’s May Day theme, “Insecurity and Poverty: Bane of Decent Work,” as timely, noting that rising insecurity and economic hardship are making life harder for workers and reducing productivity.

According to her, journalists in the FCT face growing risks while carrying out their duties, often working in unsafe conditions to inform the public and hold leaders accountable.

“Insecurity not only puts lives at risk, it also limits access to information and makes it harder for journalists to do their work,” she said.

Ike added that poverty and rising living costs are affecting the welfare and morale of workers, calling for deliberate and sustained efforts to improve the situation.

She urged governments at all levels to strengthen security and implement policies that will reduce poverty and create economic opportunities for Nigerians.

The NUJ chairman also called on media organisations to improve the welfare of journalists through better pay, safer working conditions, insurance cover and continuous training.

She stressed the need for unity among union members, encouraging journalists to remain committed to professionalism and continue to speak up on issues affecting society.

Despite the challenges, Ike urged workers to stay resilient, expressing hope that collective efforts can help build a safer and more prosperous society.

She wished all workers in the FCT a safe and meaningful May Day celebration.
