The National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency (NABRDA) has assured Nigerians of the safety and benefits of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in addressing food security, malnutrition, and environmental sustainability.
Speaking at a global press conference in Abuja, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha, Director General/CEO of NABRDA, emphasized that GMOs are a crucial advancement in biotechnology, offering numerous benefits across agriculture, health, industry, and the environment.
NABRDA highlighted the potential of GMOs to revolutionize approaches to food scarcity, malnutrition, and environmental sustainability, citing examples of crops like Bt Cowpea, Bt Cotton, and Tela Maize.
The agency assured that Tela Maize, recently released and sparking controversy, has undergone rigorous testing and evaluation, deeming it safe for consumption and the environment.
NABDA urged the public to move past fear and skepticism, embracing this technology for the benefit of all Nigerians. The agency called on journalists to partner in disseminating accurate information, countering misinformation and empowering the public with knowledge to make informed decisions.
By adopting GMOs, Nigeria can increase food security, improve crop yields, and reduce harmful pesticides, contributing to a more resilient and sustainable agricultural sector.
