The National Agricultural Seeds Council (NASC) has assured Nigerians of the safety and benefits of Genetically Modified (GM) technology in addressing the country’s food security challenges.
Speaking at a world press conference, the Director General of NASC emphasized that GM technology is a crucial tool in developing crop varieties that can withstand stress, disease, and pests, thereby improving yield and productivity.
NASC highlighted its role in regulating the production, marketing, and use of seeds in Nigeria, including GM seeds, which have undergone rigorous testing and evaluation. The agency assured farmers and seed users of the quality and safety of GM seeds, dispelling misconceptions about their use.
The Director General stated that GM seeds can be replanted, and fields used for GM crops can be reused for other purposes.
He also clarified that there is no empirical evidence linking GM seeds to cancer. NASC, encouraged farmers to adopt GM technology to improve yield and productivity, assuring them of support and addressing concerns through collaboration with relevant institutions.
With 202 maize varieties, 42 cowpea varieties, and 16 cotton varieties approved for commercialization, NASC emphasized the availability of choices for farmers and seed users, dispelling fears and misconceptions about GM technology.
