NASS URGED TO FAST-TRACK STATE POLICE LAW

A leading policy group, the Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI), has called on the National Assembly to urgently invoke the doctrine of necessity to speed up the creation of state police across the country.
The group expressed concern over the delay in establishing a decentralised policing system, describing it as crucial to tackling Nigeria’s growing security challenges.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Dr. Omoniyi Akinsiju, IMPI said the police should remain the foundation of the nation’s internal security structure and stressed the need for officers who understand the communities they serve.
According to the group, police officers recruited from their local areas are more effective because they are familiar with the culture, language and environment of the people.
“We call on the National Assembly to invoke the doctrine of necessity to ensure the passage of the law creating State Police without further delay,” the statement said.
IMPI also urged state governments to strengthen community participation in security matters, saying local involvement is key to maintaining peace and safety.
The group noted that community mobilisation brings together traditional leaders, local organisations, residents and government agencies to collectively address security challenges.
It explained that such collaboration promotes accountability, good governance and peaceful conflict resolution while helping communities take ownership of their security.
IMPI maintained that security should remain a top priority for all levels of government and called for urgent action to establish state police as part of broader efforts to improve safety across the country.
