The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, has made a passionate call for urgent intervention in key national issues, including the protection of the girl child, economic relief, and fair housing policies for journalists.
At its monthly congress held on March 15, 2025, at the NUJ FCT Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, and presided over by Chairperson Comrade Bassey Ita Ikpang, NAWOJ emphasized the need to amplify the voices of women and vulnerable groups in society while addressing pressing economic and social concerns.
A strong appeal was made for the protection of the girl child, urging parents, schools, and society to empower young girls to speak up against harassment and gender-based violence.
NAWOJ members stressed the necessity of swift action to combat these issues, calling on authorities to implement and strengthen policies that ensure justice for victims.

Amidst discussions on economic hardships, the congress acknowledged the Federal Government’s recent economic reforms, including reductions in fuel prices and exchange rates. However, NAWOJ expressed concerns over the persistent rise in the cost of essential commodities and urged the government to introduce stronger measures to regulate prices and provide economic relief to struggling citizens. Additionally, the escalating costs of electricity and data tariffs were condemned, as these increases place undue financial burdens on Nigerians.
The association called on regulators to review pricing structures and implement fairer policies that would ease economic pressure on the masses.
The congress also raised alarms over the increasing consumption of sachet alcoholic drinks and their negative societal impact. NAWOJ called for stringent regulations to control the sale and distribution of these products, urging government agencies to take decisive action in enforcing stricter policies.
With housing affordability becoming a growing concern, NAWOJ deliberated on engaging stakeholders to secure better housing options for journalists, particularly in the FCT, where rent costs have skyrocketed. Members urged the government to implement policies that would regulate house rent increases and prevent arbitrary hikes by landlords, ensuring that journalists and other citizens have access to affordable housing.
As part of preparations for the upcoming NAWOJ International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration on March 26, 2025, members were encouraged to participate actively in the event themed “Amplifying the Voices of Rural Women.” Explaining that the event aims to bring attention to the challenges faced by women in rural communities while celebrating their resilience and achievements.

The session ended on a celebratory note with special recognition for members born in March.
Additionally, NAWOJians were commended for their continued solidarity and support for former NAWOJ Chairperson, Comrade Stella Okononese.
NAWOJ FCT reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to advocating for women’s rights, economic justice, and policies that enhance the welfare of journalists and the general public.
