NAWOJ Mourns Media Icon Dr. Doyin Abiola

By Queen Kunde

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran journalist and media icon, Dr. Doyin Abiola, who died on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the age of 82.

In a statement signed by NAWOJ National Secretary, Wasilah Ladan, the association paid glowing tribute to Dr. Abiola’s towering legacy, describing her as “a trailblazer in every sense.”

NAWOJ National Chairperson, Hajia Aisha Ibrahim hailed the late Abiola as a woman of immense courage and vision who “broke down barriers for women in journalism and left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s media landscape.”

Among her many achievements, Dr. Abiola was:

  • The first Nigerian woman to serve as editor and managing director/editor-in-chief of a national daily.
  • Founding editor of the National Concord newspaper, established by her husband, the late Chief MKO Abiola.
  • Appointed Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of National Concord in 1986.
  • Chairperson of the Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA) nomination panel.
  • A member of the Advisory Council for the Faculty of Social and Management Sciences at Ogun State University.

“She was a symbol of professionalism, public service, and dignity,” Hajia Aisha said, adding that “Dr. Abiola’s influence on generations of journalists particularly women is immeasurable.”

She also praised Abiola’s quiet strength during her husband’s incarceration in the aftermath of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, a period during which her resilience drew national admiration.

“Dr. Abiola inspired countless women to believe in their voice and lead boldly in a male-dominated space. Her passing is a profound loss not just to journalism, but to Nigeria as a whole,” the NAWOJ Chairperson said.

The association offered prayers for the repose of her soul and extended heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and the wider media community.
