Nigeria at 65: Voices of Unity, Patriotism and a Call to Harness Nation’s Greatness

Nigeria at 65: Voices of Unity, Patriotism and a Call to Harness Nation’s Greatness

By Queen Kunde

Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary took a unique turn in Abuja on Wednesday 1 October 2025 as the Nigeria First Foundation gathered leaders, voices from the Diaspora, politicians and civil society under one roof with a single mission: to project the country in good light before the world and renew the call for patriotism, ethical leadership, and inclusive nation-building.

In his stirring opening address, Comrade Vik-Morrow Ulo, Speaker of the Nigeria First Foundation, described the independence milestone as “a starting point for legacy building.” He urged Nigerians both at home and abroad to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of championing homegrown products and civil community building.

“We must begin to believe in our nation, support our leaders, and create opportunities that reflect the greatness of our people,” Ulo said.

From women’s leadership to ethical governance, speakers drew attention to Nigeria’s unfinished business in nation-building. Amb. Lucy Fadumila, FCT Coordinator on Special Needs for the Foundation, made a passionate appeal for more women in leadership, stressing that Nigeria’s 65 years of independence must count for greater gender inclusion. Echoing her, Dr. Chinwe Nnorom, PDP’s National Publicity Director, warned that “patriarchy cannot be wished away if Nigeria must progress,” insisting that women must have a seat at the negotiating table.

The Diaspora voice came alive through Ambassador Obinna Ejiaya from Australia, who lamented the waning spirit of patriotism among Nigerians. “We must love our country and make sacrifices. I have come home to set up ventures that will create jobs for our youths,” he said, urging politicians to lead with sincerity.

In a deeply reflective moment, Mrs. Sarah Jibril, former presidential aspirant and ex-Special Adviser on Ethics and Values to President Goodluck Jonathan, called for moral rebirth. “At 65, Nigeria is old enough to know right from wrong. Our dignity must be restored through ethical leadership and integrity built on trust and peace,” she declared.

The call from the Diaspora was amplified by HRH Chief Amina Temitope Ajayi, President of Nigerians in Diaspora. She appealed to Nigerians abroad to return and invest in the country’s growth. “Nigeria is blessed with rare resources. Only Nigerians can build Nigeria. Let’s look back home and create a nation our children will be proud of,” she urged.

The event also featured goodwill messages from dignitaries, including former Akwa Ibom Governor Obong Victor Attah and Dr. Olubunmi Usim-Wilson, who, joining virtually, encouraged Nigerians to “keep hope alive” and to continue to coexist in peace and unity.

Cultural troupes crowned the celebration with electrifying dances, reminding guests of Nigeria’s rich heritage of love, resilience, and togetherness.

As Nigeria steps into its 66th year, the Nigeria First Foundation’s message was unmistakable: unity, patriotism, and purposeful leadership remain the true pillars of a nation destined for greatness.
