Amid rising tensions, economic hardship, and growing insecurity in Nigeria, the President of the Christian Council of Nigeria, The Most Rev. Dr. David O.C. Onuoha, has called for urgent action to safeguard the country’s unity and stability. In a press statement released on March 24, 2025, he emphasized the need for responsible leadership, justice, and mutual trust to prevent further deterioration of national peace.
“The tension in our country as a result of current happenings does not in any way portend good to any of us,” Onuoha stated, urging leaders at all levels to prioritize citizens’ welfare over political interests. He warned against actions that could further inflame the already fragile polity, stressing that impunity is a precursor to anarchy.
Onuoha also called on members of the judiciary to uphold justice without bias, reminding them that their rulings should promote order rather than confusion. “Nigerians look up to them for pronouncements that will hold everyone accountable and compel them to abide by rules, no matter how highly placed,” he said.
Addressing lawmakers and government officials, he reminded them of their duty to serve the people rather than pursue personal or political gains. “Any action that is not in the manifest interest of their constituents is a betrayal of trust and a great disservice to successive generations of Nigerians,” he added.
The religious leader expressed deep concern over the continuous loss of innocent lives, including security personnel, due to violent attacks by terrorists, bandits, and herdsmen. He called for a collective effort to end these atrocities before they “stop Nigeria.”
Onuoha further emphasized that Nigeria is blessed with enough resources to ensure the well-being of all citizens, provided equity, fairness, and genuine brotherhood are upheld. As the country observes the sacred periods of Lent and Ramadan, he urged Nigerians to use the time for deep reflection, reconciliation, and prayer for national unity.
Quoting Amos 5:24, he concluded with a resounding call for justice: “Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.”
With the country at a critical juncture, Onuoha’s message serves as a powerful reminder that preserving Nigeria’s unity requires the collective commitment of its leaders and citizens alike.
