In a groundbreaking move to enhance food security and streamline government services, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS), in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has unveiled the NIN-enabled Farmer Registry and Government-to-People (G2P) Card initiative.
This innovative project, aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aims to tackle challenges of identity and authentication, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and inclusivity in delivering government programs to farmers and rural communities.
The G2P card, powered by the National Identity Number (NIN), offers a biometrics-based solution that uniquely identifies farmers, linking them to their farmlands, crops, and livestock. It enables secure delivery of services such as farmer financing, input distribution, extension services, and agency banking, even in remote areas without internet connectivity.
A key feature of the card is its large-capacity chip, which stores identity details, fingerprints, and multiple digital wallets for targeted interventions like subsidies, loans, and welfare disbursements. With NIMC providing a robust biometric identity ecosystem, FMAFS can administer programs with end-to-end visibility and eliminate fraud.
This statement jointly signed by FMAFS and NIMC spoke persons also states that the initiative will revolutionize how we support our farmers, ensuring that every intervention is impactful and reaches the right beneficiaries.
The project underscores the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable agricultural development and economic empowerment.
