In a remarkable display of civic responsibility and compassion, Ukpevo Faith, a 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, is leading a transformative project to build a perimeter fence around the Durumi cemetery in Nigeria’s capital.
Moved by the cemetery’s neglected condition during a community cleaning exercise, Faith has taken it upon herself to restore dignity and security to the final resting place of many. The ambitious project—estimated to cost over 21 million naira—is already attracting attention from community leaders, organizations, and philanthropists, though more sponsors are still needed to bring the initiative to completion.
“I was moved to ask questions when I saw the cemetery’s state,” Faith shared. “I realized that funds and manpower were the major factors hindering the perimeter fence from being raised.”
Her vision includes constructing a durable boundary around the 4-hectare burial ground to prevent trespassing, vandalism, and further desecration. Through detailed proposals and passionate outreach, she has begun receiving positive responses from potential sponsors.
A graduate of Accounting from the University of Abuja, Faith draws strength from her strong Christian faith and her mother—whom she describes as her role model. “For every good work of kindness and show of love and respect, God honors every bit of it,” she said.
Though still early in her professional journey, Faith’s efforts are setting a powerful example for her peers, proving that young people can lead impactful change in their communities.
With official approvals secured and growing support, Faith remains hopeful that her project will not only be completed but also inspire future generations of Nigerians to take up meaningful social initiatives.
