NILOWV Rallies Support for Special Seats Bill at Constitutional Reform Hearing

NILOWV DEMANDS SENATOR AKPABIO’S RESIGNATION OVER GENDER BIAS, DISRESPECT TO WOMEN IN POLITICS

By Queen Kunde

The League of Women Voters of Nigeria (NILOWV) has thrown its weight behind the Special Seats Bill as the nation prepares for the National Public Hearing on Constitutional Reform scheduled for September 22, 2025, at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

In a statement signed by its President, Irene Awunah-Ikyegh, NILOWV described the hearing as a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey and congratulated the House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Amendment, led by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, for advancing the reform process.

Highlighting its campaign for gender equality and inclusive governance, the group said it spearheaded grassroots mobilization across the country, convening over 30 multi-sectoral town halls and securing more than one million signatures in support of the Special Seats Bill. The proposed legislation seeks to reserve seats for women in the National and State Houses of Assembly, a move NILOWV insists will transform political representation in Nigeria.

The organization called on delegates and citizens, particularly women in the Federal Capital Territory, to demonstrate solidarity and back the bill’s passage. According to NILOWV, the measure will strengthen legitimacy and effectiveness in governance by ensuring women’s voices and perspectives are adequately reflected in legislative processes.

“This is a legacy initiative with enduring impact for future generations,” Awunah-Ikyegh said, urging lawmakers to seize the historic opportunity to enshrine gender inclusivity in Nigeria’s political system. She emphasized that passage of the bill would mark lawmakers as champions of progress, equality, and sustainable national development.
