The Nigeria Union of Journalists has unveiled activities for its 2026 Press Week, with a strong focus on combating disinformation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The week-long event, scheduled for May 16 to May 22 in Abuja, will bring together journalists, policymakers, civil society groups, and media stakeholders to discuss the role of the media in defending democracy and promoting credible elections.

Speaking ahead of the event, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, described the celebration as “a week of impact, reflection, celebration, and professional excellence.”

This year’s theme is: “2027 Election: Defending Nigeria’s Democracy in the Age of Disinformation.”

According to the organisers, activities lined up include a medical outreach, mental health walk, public lecture, awards ceremony, secondary school press club quiz competition, and a grand finale jean party.

The medical outreach, organised in partnership with Nizamiye Hospital, will provide free medical checks and consultations for journalists and members of the public at the NUJ Secretariat in Utako.

A major highlight of the week will be the public lecture and awards ceremony scheduled for May 19 at the Transcorp Hilton Abuja, where over 1,000 participants are expected.

Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, is expected to chair the lecture, while former Kano State Governor and Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria board, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, will serve as co-chairman.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, is billed as Special Guest of Honour, while former House of Representatives member, Ndudi Elumelu, will deliver the keynote address.

The council said the awards ceremony would honour outstanding journalists and notable Nigerians for excellence and contributions to national development.

Organisers called on journalists and members of the public to participate actively in the events, stressing the need for ethical journalism and national unity as Nigeria approaches another election cycle.
