NUJ FCT Chair GRACE IKE WINS HUMANITARIAN HONOUR

NUJ FCT Chair GRACE IKE WINS HUMANITARIAN HONOUR

By Queen Kunde

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, has been honoured with the Humanitarian Award for Excellence in Service in recognition of her outstanding contributions to society and national development.

The award was presented on Saturday in Abuja during the 10th anniversary celebration of the Women of Glory Foundation, a humanitarian organisation dedicated to empowering widows, single mothers, elderly women and other vulnerable groups across Nigeria.

The foundation also described Grace Ike as the “Most Active Journalistic Mobilizer,” praising her leadership and commitment to promoting positive change through journalism.

Presenting the award, the organisers commended the NUJ FCT Chairman for her role in mobilising journalists and encouraging media engagement on issues of national importance.

Grace Ike was represented at the event by the Assistant Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council, Sharon Emephia, who congratulated the Women of Glory Foundation on reaching a decade of impactful service.

“Ten years of sustained impact is no small achievement,” Emephia said. “It reflects resilience, vision and a deep commitment to service. In a time when many initiatives struggle for continuity, your decade-long journey stands as a testament to purpose-driven leadership.”

Speaking on behalf of the award recipient, she also expressed appreciation to the organisers for the honour.

“I sincerely appreciate the organisers for this recognition,” she said. “I receive this honour with gratitude and humility, and I see it not just as a personal award but as a reflection of the collective efforts of the NUJ FCT Council and the values we uphold in promoting truth, development and societal progress.”

Earlier, the Founder of the Women of Glory Foundation, Dr. Nneka Evelyn Nzewi, shared the emotional story behind the establishment of the organisation.

According to her, the foundation was born from personal hardship after the loss of her father at a young age, which left her mother struggling to raise five children with little support.

“I watched my mother fight every day to survive, provide for her family and keep hope alive despite overwhelming challenges,” she said.

Dr. Nzewi explained that those difficult experiences inspired her to make a promise to support women facing similar struggles if she succeeded in life.

Today, the Women of Glory Foundation operates in all 36 states of Nigeria, providing empowerment programmes, mentorship, skills acquisition training, healthcare support and advocacy on issues affecting women and children.

The anniversary celebration attracted women from different walks of life, many of whom have distinguished themselves in business, public service and community development.

The organisers thanked supporters and partners who have contributed to the foundation’s growth over the past decade and called for greater collaboration to expand its humanitarian reach.

“Thank you for standing with us, believing in our mission and being part of this journey of impact,” Dr. Nzewi said. “Together, we can continue changing lives and giving hope to those who need it most.”
