The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has called on relevant authorities to urgently address mounting environmental and consumer protection concerns in the nation’s capital.

Rising from its Congress held on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the NUJ FCT Secretariat in Abuja, the Council decried the worsening waste management situation at Jabi Park Junction and the alleged exploitative decommissioning of electricity meters by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, which also featured a valedictory session in honour of the late Comrade Stella Okoh-Esene, former Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter, members paid glowing tribute to the late unionist, describing her as “a fearless and principled journalist who championed the cause of women in the media.”
The Congress expressed grave concern over the unsanitary condition of Jabi Park Junction and its adjoining areas, lamenting the failure of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) to act despite earlier calls for intervention. The union urged the agency to “take immediate and concrete steps to clear the waste and ensure sustainable sanitation measures to avert public health risks.”
On the issue of power supply, the Council condemned the ongoing decommissioning of certain electricity meters by the AEDC, which it said was being carried out without prior notice to consumers. It described the practice allegedly forcing residents to pay heavily for replacements as “exploitative and insensitive.”
The communiqué urged the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to investigate the matter and compel AEDC to halt actions that impose unnecessary hardship on FCT residents.
While commending members for their commitment to ethical journalism and union solidarity, the NUJ FCT Council reaffirmed its dedication to upholding integrity, fairness, and professionalism, values it said were championed by the late Stella Okoh-Esene.
