The Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Edet Otu, has appointed Comrade Ebriku John Friday (JP), a prominent journalist and Ex-Officio member of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Data Analytics.
The appointment was officially confirmed in a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Anthony Owan-Enoh.
Reacting to the news, the NUJ FCT Council, led by Chairperson Comrade Grace Ike, described Friday as a seasoned journalist, media entrepreneur, and youth advocate whose career spans media, politics, and grassroots development. She lauded the appointment as well-deserved and a win for the media industry.
Comrade Ebriku, in a statement, expressed profound gratitude to Governor Otu for entrusting him with the opportunity to serve. “I am humbled and honoured by this appointment. I pledge to bring my full weight of experience, professionalism, and dedication to this role in support of the administration’s vision for the people of Cross River State,” he said.
He urged fellow Cross Riverians, particularly the youth, to rally behind the Otu administration, assuring that the young population will remain a central focus in policy and development plans.
Ebriku hails from Yala LGA in Cross River State and studied Economics at the University of Abuja. Over two decades, he carved a reputation in Nigeria’s media space, holding several editorial and managerial positions at the Leadership Newspaper, where he rose from News Page Design Editor to General Manager.
He is the publisher of notable online platforms including TheLeaderNG.com, DailyPatriot.ng, and Jabbama.ng, under eHub Media Nigeria Limited. He currently serves as the editor of the NUJ FCT Council’s digital platforms.
Ebriku also leads the civic initiative Project1000, which drives youth empowerment and community-based agricultural projects. His work in peacebuilding and good governance earned him several honours, including Niger Delta Youth Ambassador (2021) and Media Personality of the Year at the 2023 Yala Achievers Awards.
Known for his humility, grassroots connection, and spiritual values, Comrade Ebriku’s appointment is widely celebrated across Yala and the larger Cross River media and civic space.
Local NGOs and youth groups have applauded the decision, describing him as “a patriotic and visionary son of Yala nation” poised to bring value to the state government.
As he steps into his new role, expectations are high that Comrade Ebriku will use data and digital tools to inform governance and foster inclusive development across Cross River State.
