The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, is in mourning following the sudden death of veteran journalist and respected media icon, Dr. Leon Usigbe, who passed away on Friday, July 25, 2025, after a brief illness.

Dr. Usigbe, a revered figure in Nigeria’s media landscape, died at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) in Abuja, after initially receiving treatment at the State House Clinic. His death marks the end of a storied career that spanned decades and left a lasting imprint on political journalism and public discourse.

Hailing from Uromi in Edo State, Dr. Usigbe’s journalistic journey began with Vanguard Newspaper, where he served with distinction in Katsina, Kaduna, and Abuja, notably covering the House of Representatives. He later served as Media Aide to former Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Aminu Masari, before returning to Vanguard and eventually joining the Nigerian Tribune as Bureau Chief in Abuja.

Known for his integrity, fairness, and fearless reporting, Dr. Usigbe covered major political beats, including the State House and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with unmatched depth and clarity. His work earned him wide acclaim and made him a mentor and role model to many younger journalists.

“Dr. Usigbe was a journalist’s journalist committed to truth, dedicated to giving voice to the voiceless, and deeply ethical in his craft,” said Comrade Jide Oyekunle, Secretary of the NUJ FCT Council. “His passing is not just a loss to the NUJ family but to Nigerian journalism as a whole.”

The NUJ FCT described his death as a devastating blow to a profession that continues to battle for relevance, credibility, and survival in the face of growing challenges. “Dr. Usigbe’s life and work remind us of the noble ideals journalism must uphold, especially in times like these,” the union stated.

Tributes have poured in from colleagues, political leaders, and media executives, all echoing a common theme: Dr. Usigbe was more than a journalist he was a compass of credibility in an era of misinformation.

The NUJ FCT Council extended heartfelt condolences to his family, the Nigerian Tribune, and all who were touched by his work, character, and unwavering pursuit of excellence.

Dr. Leon Usigbe is survived by his family and a legacy of truth-telling that will inspire generations to come.
