In a heart-warming Christmas gesture, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, under the leadership of its Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, has distributed over 600 bags of rice to journalists in Abuja.

The annual initiative is part of the council’s effort to support members and ease the impact of the current economic hardship, especially during the festive season. It has also become a strong symbol of unity and care within the NUJ FCT family.

Speaking during the distribution, Comrade Ike said the exercise goes beyond seasonal charity, stressing that it reflects the council’s deep commitment to the welfare of journalists who work daily under pressure to serve the public.

“This is more than rice,” she said. “It is our way of standing with you and appreciating your sacrifices as journalists who uphold truth, accountability and public service.”

Earlier, the NUJ FCT leadership held an end-of-year interactive session with members of the State Executive Council (SEC), made up of chapel chairmen and secretaries. During the meeting, Comrade Ike briefed members on key achievements of her administration, including progress on the construction and remodelling of the NUJ Congress Hall.
She called for continued cooperation among members to strengthen the union and sustain the gains recorded so far.
The meeting ended with a unanimous vote of confidence in her leadership, which SEC members described as proactive, focused and performance-driven.
Comrade Ike noted that the rice distribution, now in its second year, was inspired by the positive impact of last year’s exercise.
“We saw the joy it brought to homes last Christmas,” she said. “This year, we are building on that legacy to ensure that no member is left behind.”
She also reminded journalists of the true spirit of unionism and solidarity, especially at a time when the profession faces growing challenges.
“As we celebrate Christmas, let us remember that our strength lies in standing together,” she added.
Members who received the rice expressed appreciation to the NUJ FCT leadership, describing the gesture as timely and thoughtful.
The initiative once again highlights the NUJ FCT Council’s resolve to place journalists’ welfare at the centre of its activities while promoting unity, compassion and shared responsibility within the union.
