The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council has raised alarm over the activities of fraudulent groups exploiting its secretariat to deceive unsuspecting members of the public, government agencies, and corporate bodies.
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the Council cautioned against faceless coalitions and individuals who disguise themselves as journalists to organize press briefings at the NUJ Secretariat in Utako, Abuja, with the intent of blackmailing, extorting, or harassing targeted organizations and individuals.
“It has come to our notice that some unscrupulous persons are using the NUJ FCT premises under false pretenses, printing flyers to announce press conferences, only to weaponize them for defamation or, in some cases, never show up at all,” Oyekunle stated.
The Union stressed that the NUJ Secretariat is not available for hire by individuals, political actors, or coalitions seeking to advance selfish or commercial interests through deceitful means. Only accredited journalists and recognized professional bodies within the media industry are permitted to use the facility.
To curb further misuse, the Council revealed that security measures and vetting processes have been strengthened at its secretariat. It further pledged to work with law enforcement agencies to track down and prosecute offenders.
“We will not allow the sacred grounds of journalism to be compromised by blackmailers and fraudsters. NUJ FCT stands for ethical reporting and integrity,” Oyekunle added.
The Council urged the public and relevant agencies to always verify with NUJ FCT leadership before recognizing or attending any event purportedly held at the Union premises.
