The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has welcomed the victory of journalist Jide Oyekunle at the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice, describing it as a major triumph for journalism and press freedom in Nigeria.
The regional court recently awarded Oyekunle, a reporter with Independent Newspaper, N10 million in damages after finding that his rights were violated by the Nigerian government.
Reacting to the judgment on Wednesday, the NUJ said the ruling sends a strong message that journalists must be protected while carrying out their duty of informing the public.
In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Comrade Achike Chude, the union praised Avocats Sans Frontières France (ASF France) for standing by the journalist and providing legal support throughout the case.
According to the NUJ, the judgment is a significant step toward safeguarding media freedom and ensuring that attacks, intimidation and harassment of journalists do not go unpunished.
“The decision is not only a victory for Jide Oyekunle but also a victory for journalism and the rights of media professionals across the country,” the union stated.
The NUJ urged the Federal Government to respect the court’s decision and promptly pay the N10 million compensation awarded to the journalist.
It noted that complying with the ruling would demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to the rule of law, human rights and democratic principles.
The union also called for stronger measures to guarantee the safety, independence and protection of journalists nationwide.
Media stakeholders have described the judgment as a landmark ruling that could strengthen press freedom and encourage journalists to continue their work without fear of intimidation.
For many observers, the verdict represents a significant victory in the ongoing struggle to protect free expression and uphold the rights of journalists in Nigeria.
