The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has announced the passing of one of Nigeria’s most revered media figures, Mr. Dan Agbese, describing his death as a monumental loss to journalism and the nation.
Agbese, co-founder of the trailblazing Newswatch magazine, was widely celebrated for his courage, editorial brilliance and unwavering commitment to truth and public accountability. For decades, he stood as a moral compass in Nigeria’s media landscape, mentoring generations of journalists and shaping national discourse with uncommon integrity.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, the NUJ National Secretariat last year honoured him with the prestigious Media Icon Award at a grand ceremony in Lagos — a testament to the esteem in which he was held across the profession.
NUJ President, Alhassan Yahya, in a condolence message, said Agbese’s passing “is a profound loss, not only to the media industry but to the entire country,” noting that his legacy of ethical journalism will continue to inspire practitioners for years to come.
The Union extended heartfelt sympathies to his family, colleagues, friends and the broader media community, praying for the repose of his soul and for comfort to all who mourn him.
