Plateau State University Bokkos has issued a strong rebuttal to viral claims circulating on social media alleging that a student was punished for raising concerns over living conditions around campus.
The university described the accusations as “false, malicious, and deliberately misleading.”
In a press statement signed by Acting Public Relations Officer, Masara Kim, the university dismissed the narrative as a “desperate attempt” by a social media comedian identified as a former employee of a media outlet dismissed for ethical violations to boost his flailing online relevance.
“No student has been, nor will be, punished for responsibly exercising their right to free expression,” the statement clarified.
“Any disciplinary action would only follow breaches of university rules as detailed in the student handbook.”
The university emphasized that no formal complaints were filed through established channels such as the Students Union Government or the Dean of Student Affairs. Instead, the claims were funneled to a non-journalist who made no effort to verify the allegations with school authorities.
The alleged issues, including lack of water and electricity, reportedly concern off-campus residences, which are beyond the university’s control. Meanwhile, the institution highlighted a host of recent infrastructure achievements, including the commissioning of six major projects in a single day among them renovated faculty buildings, hostels, and a 4.7 km security fence.
The statement also cited the installation of two new boreholes at student hostels within the last four months and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to student welfare under the leadership of Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Shedrack Gaya Best.
“The comedian failed to verify his claims or even visit the university,” Kim stated. “This is not journalism, it is cheap blackmail and clickbait.”
The university concluded by urging the public to disregard the “sensational falsehoods” and reaffirmed its focus on creating a conducive academic environment for all students.
