Rotary Club to Build 25m School for Forgotten Village in Nasarawa

In a bid to bridge the education gap in underserved communities, the Rotary Club of Abuja Central Business District (CBD) has announced a 25 million school construction project for Gidan Gimba, a remote village in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The project, set to kick off with the new Rotary year on July 1, 2025, will see the building of two blocks of classrooms, a head teacher’s office, and provision of essential furniture, all aimed at transforming the learning environment for children in the community.

Incoming President of the Club, Hajiya Lauratu Samaila Yenwan, made the announcement in Abuja over the weekend, emphasizing that the project aligns with Rotary International’s commitment to basic education and literacy.

She stated that the initiative is part of a broader plan to make lasting impact in Gidan Gimba, the Club’s adopted community, which has long suffered from educational neglect.

In addition to the classroom blocks, the Rotary Club plans to roll out several other impactful interventions. These include restoring the community’s borehole previously donated by the Club, distributing sanitary pads to schoolgirls to promote menstrual hygiene, conducting maternal and child health outreaches, launching tree-planting campaigns, and empowering internally displaced persons through economic support programs.

To implement the full suite of proposed interventions, the Club estimates it will require about 35 million and has called on public-spirited individuals and corporate organizations to support the cause.

As part of the fundraising efforts, a charity event will be held on Friday, July 4, 2025, at the Shoprite Novare Central Office Park in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, starting at 4 p.m. The event will feature Hon. Dr. Jeremiah Umaru, Member of the House of Representatives, as Chairman of the Occasion, and veteran journalist and publisher Mr. Paddy Ezeala as guest speaker, delivering a keynote on the theme “Uniting for Good: Building a Better World, One Community at a Time.”

Hajiya Lauratu Yenwan, an accomplished entrepreneur with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Abuja’s Centre for Distance Learning, is set to assume office as the ninth president of the Club, succeeding Rotarian Katherine Adamu, MFR. Chartered in November 2016, the Rotary Club of Abuja CBD continues to build a strong legacy of service and impact, one community at a time.
