The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Federal Ministry of Transportation have begun plans to connect the Kano Railway Station and other railway facilities to the National Grid in a move aimed at improving railway services through a stable electricity supply.

The decision followed a strategic stakeholders’ meeting held on July 7, 2026, at the TCN Kano Regional Headquarters.

The planned grid connection is expected to provide reliable power for railway operations, reduce power-related disruptions and boost the efficiency of rail transport in Kano and beyond.

At the meeting, officials discussed the technical requirements for the project, implementation timelines, operational coordination and the roles of the various agencies involved. They also examined measures to ensure compliance with national grid standards, network safety and smooth integration into the transmission system.

Speaking during the meeting, the General Manager (Transmission), Kano Region, Engr. M. K. Bello, stressed the need for close cooperation among all stakeholders. He said early technical planning would ensure the successful execution of the project and guarantee dependable electricity for the railway facilities.

The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to delivering the project in line with the Federal Government’s drive to modernise critical infrastructure across the country.

When completed, the grid connection is expected to strengthen railway operations, improve service delivery in the transport sector and support the government’s broader goal of providing reliable electricity for key national infrastructure.

Representatives of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) Kano Region, the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), Team Nigeria, the project consultants, and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the project contractor, attended the meeting.
