Vendors Hail NUJ-FCT Strides Under Comrade Grace Ike’s Leadership

Vendors Hail NUJ-FCT Strides Under Comrade Grace Ike’s Leadership

By Queen Kunde

Newspaper vendors in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, have applauded the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, for what they described as “remarkable progress” achieved under the stewardship of Comrade Grace Ike, less than a year into her tenure.

The commendation came during a courtesy visit by the Newspaper Vendors Association of Nigeria, Abuja chapter, led by its Board of Trustees Chairman, Mr. Edmund Arikpo, to the NUJ-FCT Secretariat in Utako. The association also presented Ike with a symbolic gift of honour, citing her humility, compassion, and people-oriented leadership style.

“We have come to identify with you, ma. One thing I’ve noticed and sincerely admire is your humility. It is rare and truly inspiring,” Arikpo said.

Arikpo, who has been in the business since 1996, used the occasion to highlight the economic struggles confronting vendors, especially as the rise of digital platforms continues to erode newspaper sales. He warned that many vendors have been forced out of business, with some returning to their villages.

“Through vending, I was able to build a home and raise a family. But today, smartphones and online news are pushing our members out. Some publishers even release the day’s papers online before they hit the streets. That hurts sales,” he lamented.

The vendors urged publishers to strike a balance by protecting their livelihood while embracing digitization. “We are not against online publishing,” Arikpo said, “but there must be consideration for those who move the physical copies across the country.”

In her response, NUJ-FCT Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, expressed gratitude for the association’s support and stressed the inseparable bond between journalists and vendors.

“We are partners in progress. Vendors and journalists are two sides of the same coin. In whatever way you think we can work together or support each other, please don’t hesitate to reach out,” she assured.

While acknowledging the challenges posed by technology, Ike encouraged vendors to stay resilient, adding that print media still carries weight in archiving and deep reading. “The media cannot thrive without your input,” she affirmed.

She pledged continued collaboration between the NUJ and the vendors’ association, describing their roles as vital to sustaining the values and survival of journalism in Nigeria.
