Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has credited the Nigerian Army’s intensified operations against crude oil theft and other criminal activities with the recent increase in the nation’s oil production and revenue.
Governor Fubara made the commendation on Friday when he received the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, who paid him a courtesy visit in Port Harcourt ahead of the Nigerian Army’s 163rd Anniversary Celebration, scheduled to hold in Rivers State.
The governor said the military’s sustained efforts in protecting critical oil and gas infrastructure have significantly curtailed illegal bunkering and other forms of economic sabotage, resulting in improved crude oil output and higher revenue accruals to the Federation.
“The Nigerian Army has continued to play a critical role in protecting strategic national assets, particularly oil and gas facilities, through its operations against criminal elements involved in crude oil theft and illegal bunkering,” Fubara stated.
He added that the improved security environment around oil installations has directly translated into increased production levels and boosted national revenue.
The governor also lauded Lt. Gen. Shaibu’s leadership, particularly his commitment to enhancing the welfare of officers and men as well as strengthening overall security across the country.
He expressed confidence that the Army would continue to uphold its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity and ensuring internal security.
Fubara described the decision to host the Army’s anniversary celebration in Rivers State as a clear vote of confidence in the prevailing peace and stability in the state, contrary to negative security narratives in some quarters.
He assured the Army and other security agencies of his administration’s unwavering support, describing security as a collective responsibility.
“Our administration will continue to partner with the military to sustain peace, security, and economic growth in Rivers State and the country at large,” the governor pledged.
Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, said his visit to Rivers State was part of activities lined up for the 163rd Anniversary Celebration of the Nigerian Army.
He disclosed that the event would attract Chiefs of Army Staff from 21 African countries, two former African Presidents, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other high-profile dignitaries.
Lt. Gen. Shaibu described Rivers State as a strategic partner to the Nigerian Army and commended Governor Fubara for the state government’s consistent support to the 6 Division, especially the provision of infrastructure and facilities for the forthcoming anniversary.
He expressed appreciation for the governor’s commitment to enhancing the operational capacity of the Army in the state.
