IGP Disu Orders Crackdown on Vehicles Without Number Plates

By Raphael Ekwe

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to intensify proactive and intelligence-driven operations to tackle emerging security threats across the country.

Disu gave the charge on Tuesday during the monthly strategic conference of top police officers held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The IGP specifically ordered Commissioners of Police and tactical commanders nationwide to step up enforcement against motorists plying roads with vehicles without number plates or those with concealed registration numbers.

He expressed worry over the growing trend, stressing that such practices constitute a major security risk and will no longer be tolerated by the police.

Speaking to Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, Assistant Inspectors-General, Commissioners of Police and other strategic senior officers, Disu noted that the nation continues to face multifaceted security challenges ranging from kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence, terrorism, banditry, farmer-herder conflicts to cyber-enabled crimes.

He emphasised the need for stronger leadership, better coordination and more effective operational strategies to keep criminals on the back foot.

The IGP disclosed that since the last conference in May 2026, the Force has recorded notable successes, including the arrest of eight suspected terrorists, 55 kidnapping suspects, 65 armed robbery suspects, 29 murder suspects and 42 suspected cultists.

Security operatives also rescued 88 kidnapped victims and recovered 114 firearms, 843 rounds of ammunition and 28 stolen vehicles in various operations nationwide.

The high-level meeting reviewed the current security situation and assessed ongoing policing strategies for improved service delivery to Nigerians.
